The Buena Park Police department currently has three Forensic Specialists serving in the Crime Scene Investigation Unit. They arrange for coverage at all crime scenes on a seven-day-a-week basis.
Each specialist is highly trained in areas regarding the collection and identification of physical evidence. The Forensic Specialists document crime scenes using digital photography, video equipment, and computer-aided sketches. They are able to locate the smallest particles of evidence through the use of specialized technological equipment. This evidence may include bullet projectiles or fragments, faint blood spatters or other trace evidence such as hair and fibers. Through analysis and comparison, physical evidence is most often used to confirm a crime has occurred and can lead to the identification of suspects and subsequent prosecution. These skilled professionals have the duty to prepare evidence for courtroom testimony. Forensic Specialists present unbiased information to the court and can be requested by either the prosecution or the defense.
The Forensic Services Unit utilizes access to the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The United States and California State Departments of Justice manage this system in cooperation with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. When a Forensic Specialist submits fingerprint into this system, the database searches for a match. When a match is found, potential suspects are identified. A similar system is currently in use at the Buena Park City Jail, for true verification of arrested persons via their fingerprints. With the rapid advances in technology, Forensic Specialists are required to participate in extensive and on-going training to perform their duties at the highest level. Advancements in DNA evidence and digital photography have allowed the Forensic Services Unit to collect and process more evidence, thus contributing to successful prosecutions. In the case of photography, digital imaging is now standard and gives detectives immediate results with which to submit at the time of case filing. The Forensic Services Unit also provides their services and expertise to the La Habra Police Department on a contractual basis. |
