Communications

The Communications Unit is the hub of the Buena Park Police Department.  From the centralized Communications Center, all calls for service are received, evaluated, and prioritized by highly trained Police Dispatchers.  When you contact the Communications Unit, you will speak with a Police Dispatcher whose mission as a first responder is to provide the highest level of quality service by maintaining a cool, calm, and professional demeanor. The Dispatcher is in constant contact with police field personnel and is responsible for the deployment and coordination of resources for both emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance.

The hardworking men and women of the Communications Unit provide the primary link between the needs of our Community and the Police Department.   The Communications Unit is staffed with a Dispatch Supervisor, a Lead Dispatcher, nine full-time Dispatchers, and three part-time Dispatchers to fill all shifts needed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The critical role of a Police Dispatcher requires dedication, motivation, intense training, as well as a strong commitment and desire to support our Community. Our Dispatchers receive a variety of specialized training including Active Shooter Response, Crisis Intervention Training, and Cultural Diversity.  Four Dispatchers have additional specific training as Tactical Dispatchers and are members of the SWAT Team.

The Communications Unit operates with state-of-the-art equipment, including a computer aided dispatch system, GPS automatic vehicle location system, intelligent phone workstations and an 800 MHz trunked radio system. The Communications Center is also equipped with multiple video monitors that allow Dispatchers to view live video from a closed circuit TV system from several traffic intersection cameras located throughout the City. This innovative feature helps Dispatchers to be more proactive in their duties by providing deployed resources with updates they obtain visually.

The Buena Park Police Communications Unit handles an average of 2,000 9-1-1 calls and 6,500 business and administrative calls per month. The Dispatchers must determine the best course of action, and forward that information to the appropriate resource. Not only must Dispatchers be able to handle these calls for assistance, but be able to do so as they monitor multiple radio frequencies, dispatch calls to the police units, access a variety of local, state, and federal databases, assign case numbers, and track officer activity in the field.

In addition to these daily duties, Dispatchers must have a strong foundation of knowledge regarding city, county and state laws. Dispatchers are often called upon as a vital resource for officers who may not have access to law references in the field. Dispatchers must also be knowledgeable in area geography, including locations of significance within the City limits and areas that border the City of Buena Park. The women and men of the Buena Park Police Communications Unit are an integral part of the law enforcement team designed to provide quality public service to the residents, visitors, and business members of Buena Park.
