Crime Statistics

The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program collects and reports crime offense data for the entire nation. To accurately report data to the state or national programs, it is necessary to classify appropriate offenses into the “Part I” or “Part II” offense categories as defined by the FBI. All criminal offenses of law are classified as either “Part I” or “Part II”.

This UCR program provides a nationwide view of crime throughout the United States. The FBI assembles, publishes, and distributes the data to contributing agencies, state crime reporting programs, and others interested in the nation’s crime problem.

“Part I” offenses (Murder and Manslaughter, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny and Theft, and Vehicle Theft) comprise a “Crime Index” and serve as indicators of the nation’s crime experience.

“Part II” offenses encompass all other crime classifications. “Part II” crimes include simple assaults, forgery and counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, buying/receiving and possessing stolen property, vandalism, carrying and possessing weapons, sex offenses, drug abuse violations, gambling, disorderly conduct, drunkenness and numerous other miscellaneous offenses.

The Buena Park Police Department is reporting 2,120 “Part 1” crimes for 2011. Over the past year, “Part 1” crime statistics have decreased by 7%.

The Buena Park Police Department has a proactive approach to preventing crime. We attribute our success in the war against crime to the development of unique teams such as the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), Neighborhood Improvement Task Force (NITF), Problem Oriented Policing (POP) team, and small teams of patrol officers working on specific problem areas. We have developed a Community Police Academy (CPA) as well as a Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) program, and continue to utilize new technologies to combat crime. Also, Buena Park police officers generate a significant amount of self-initiated activity, which helps to prevent crime before it occurs. We have instilled the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing in all our personnel. We have invested in partnerships with the community and are responsive to the community’s input regarding police service. We also invest efforts in crime prevention and community education to have an impact on crime.
